AI name reader skips graduates as they cross the stage, and the crowd boos

Some students walked as the wrong name showed on screen. Others heard nothing at all on the day they had worked years for.

What happened

On 15 May 2026, Glendale Community College in Arizona used a new AI system to read out graduates’ names at its graduation.

It went wrong. The system skipped dozens of students before they reached the stage, got other names wrong, and at times showed the wrong name on the screen behind the person walking.

The ceremony was stopped. College president Tiffany Hernandez told the crowd, “So here’s what’s happening: we’re using a new AI system as our reader.” She was met with loud boos. “I am so sorry,” she said, and called it “a lesson learned.”

Why it went wrong

The college had swapped a person reading names for a new system on one of the most important days of students’ lives, apparently without a backup. When the timing slipped, the names and the walkers no longer matched.

Impact

  • Students who were skipped lined up afterwards and had their names read by a person, with photos taken then.
  • The college system apologised for “the disruption it caused during what should have been a celebratory moment.”

The lesson

  1. Some moments need a human. Hearing your name read out is the whole point of walking.
  2. Always have a backup. A person with the list could have taken over straight away.
  3. Don’t try new tech for the first time at the big event.
