What Happened
During Google’s public demonstration of Bard (its competitor to ChatGPT) on February 8, 2023, the chatbot was asked: “What new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope can I tell my 9-year-old about?”
Bard confidently responded that the James Webb Space Telescope had taken the first pictures of exoplanets.
This is false. The first pictures of exoplanets were actually taken by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in 2004 — nearly 20 years before JWST’s launch.
